Reminder, GHE families, this Wednesday, January 29, is a teacher workday and NO school.
MOMS NIGHT OUT is this Thursday, Jan. 30
Join us for Moms Night Out on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Hickory Tavern in PARK WEST Village, from 6-9 pm for a fun moms night out with delicious food and drink specials, a few raffle drawings for prizes and a chance to get to know some other moms. As a special added bonus, Hickory Tavern has offered to give back 10% to GHE. Sounds like a win-win. RSVP is not required, but appreciated. See you there!
Last call for treats for teachers. We like to keep our valued teachers staff room stocked with snacks and drinks throughout the year, and now we need your help! Please sign up to donate a few items and drop them at the front office (or have your student drop them off) on Monday, January 27 or Tuesday, January 28.
Operation Send Love
GHE teacher Cait Lin Wilson's husband, Matt, and many other men and women, were recently deployed overseas, and to show her love, Mrs. Wilson has started a donation box for girl scout cookies at our school. We would love to send as many boxes as we can to those who are serving our country. What better surprise than a delicious box of girl scout cookies. We only wait all year long for them! If you would like to make a donation please go to her page. Special thanks to Jennifer Cox Kelly, Lenora Critcher and Troop 1106. Donations will be accepted until Jan 31st.
Help cheer on the Hurricanes hockey as they take on the Vegas Golden Knights at PNC Arena this Friday, January 31 at 7:30 pm. North Carolina PTA has teamed up with the Carolina Hurricanes to offer deeply discounted tickets. A portion of each ticket purchased will be donated back to the NC PTA.
If you would like to hear more about what is going on with the North Carolina Parent Teachers Association and public schools, please tune in for a special live-stream event on February 6. It is a candidate’s forum for the March primary for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction. We look forward to a stimulating exchange of ideas about the issues facing public education and hope you’ll join us.
Squawks & Community Flocks
Thank you all who made it to the January PTA General Meeting last Thursday night. It was so great to see new faces in person, and on Facebook live. Visit us online for meeting notes within a few days. We are very excited to welcome three new very important members to our board: Marjorie Eastman, Chair Advocacy, Prasida Ganagam, Chair Recognition, and Tanya Hertel, Secretary. Thank you to NC Moms Demand Action on Be SMART for sharing information at your booth. Mark your calendars -- the next general PTA meeting will be Thursday, April 23, before STEAM night. We have open jobs if you'd like to get involved, both big and small - email us!
The Student Council students did a phenomenal job speaking at the PTA meeting --thank you to the 4th and 5th grade students and to Katie Gardner, 2nd grade teacher and Student Council adviser for organizing the presentation and the bake sale. Thank you to all the families who donated to the bake sale. Our little falcons loved all of the sweet treats, and brought smiles to so many faces (as only cookies and cupcakes can). The Student Council raised money for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to support the Australian wildfires.
What a huge turnout for Family Game Night! Congratulations to the big bingo winners (some won 3-4 times!) and thank you to all who came out and had fun as a community. We gave out 100 gift cards! Thank you to Principal Walker and Vice Principal Lombardo for running bingo night, and a very big thanks to all of the PTA members (and their kids: Francesca, London & Quinn) who came out to help: Laura Bartoli, Amy Bates, Lauren Campbell, Jeremy Cleveland, Carianne Davis, Marjorie Eastman, Prasida Ganagam, Andrea Gatt, Steve Gursslin, Mariahna Moore & Suzanne Robottom.
Our students had two guest speakers visit GHE last week.
First, Paul Carr taught the 4th Graders all about the Wright Brothers and their first flight.
Then, on Friday, Author/Illustrator Johnathan Miller captivated the 1st-3rd Graders with his Sammy tales. He read them a book from his Sammy the Dachshund series and told them about his process of making books from construction paper collages and his inspiration to write this series. Thank you to Laura Bartoli for arranging this guest speaker, and Media Specialist Jackie Carrelha.
If you are interested in getting involved at school, but only have a little time during off hours and want minimal commitment, contact us.
Displays & Decorations: Have a flair for decorations? Want to help celebrate our activities and accomplishments? We need help decorating the PTA’s glass display cases in the school lobby to coincide with key events like curriculum night and spring carnival. Grab a friend and embrace your inner artist. Time commitment is a few hours 3-4 times a year.
Nominating Committee: This committee is tasked with identifying talented, motivated, and responsible individuals to serve as officers of the GHE PTA for the 2020-2021 school year. We need a non-board PTA member to work with the current board in March & April to develop a slate of nominees and help coordinate the election in April.
5th Grade Ceremony: Calling all fourth grade parents! We are looking for a few parents to plan the 5th grade Celebration Picnic and Promotion Ceremony. Grab some friends, get the inside scoop on what you’ll experience next year, and allow our fifth grade parents to simply celebrate with their child. Get a head start now as the ceremony doesn’t happen until June.
Teacher Appreciation Week: Love your child’s teacher and wish you could do more to show them how much you care? Well, this is your lucky day. Work with the hospitality committee to help plan all kinds of ways to celebrate GHE staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8.
If you want more information about any of these positions, or have ideas for others, please email us and let us know which job you'd like to do.
Carnival of Lights Planning Committee Helpers Needed
Spring is just around the corner, and that means it almost time for the biggest GHE night of the year -- Carnival of Lights! If you're just as excited as we are for the new neon wonderland theme, come join a planning team and get your glow on!
It's a great way to get involved at the school and many hands will make everyone's job a bit easier. We have leads for all of the committees so you will not be doing this alone. Please indicate your interest in any and all of the planning opportunities. We love having new volunteers get involved because we always (always) learn from them.
Past Spirit Wear T-Shirts Wanted
We are still collecting old Green Hope Elementary spirit wear shirts for a 20th anniversary project for the school. Thank you for the ones that were brought in. If you have t-shirts from older siblings in decent condition (no holes or stains in the logo area) that you no longer need, please drop them at the front office or send them in with your child with a note that they are for the PTA t-shirt collection. Thank you!
