Timmons Group Creates Concept Plan

Raleigh-based Timmons Group was selected to design the concept the plans and drawings for the Green Hope Elementary outdoor learning environment. Timmons Group has been recognized for nearly 25 years as one of Engineering News Record’s top 500 design firms. The GHE outdoor learning environment project was designed by Michael Alderman and Blake Hall, who provided us with plans for a flexible space where all age groups can learn outdoors with natural elements as their tool for learning.

Together with the GHE PTA Outdoor Classroom Committee, Alderman devised plans from information collected from a survey disseminated to GHE teachers across all grades and ideas collected from neighboring elementary school outdoor learning environments. For this project to last for many years we will build a strong foundational base that won't erode over time. Phase 1 will consist of concrete pouring for a circular learning pod and future pavilion, a timber fence around the space, garden beds, donor recognition area with sign, gravel pathways and a storage shed. This space will generate our immediate need for outdoor group learning. Along the pathways will be educational stations that are currently being designed by the PTA academic committee and GHE teachers, based on WCPSS curriculum lessons. For example, the circular pod could be used to teach fractions, as a clock, sundial or compass.

A project of this magnitude will be constructed in phases in order to raise funds. Phases 2 & 3 will consist of the covered pavilion, dry rock stream bed and bridge, brick seating wall, large shed, arbor and a second seating circular pod.
